With the recent buzz about Kim Kardashian being Flour-bombed, the PETA activist and PETA’s
denial and eventual support of the woman in question, I have been wondering for a few days now; should animals really be victims of fashion?
Fur is perceived as a symbol of status. Celebrities believe that by wearing fur, they display wealth and elegance. Also, many fashion designers incorporate fur in their collections without considering the cruelty these helpless animals face for a fur trim or fur coat because their fashion houses realize huge profits from selling fur as a fur trim jacket or fur coat could be sold for upto $50, 000. *WOW*!
Annually, the global demand for fur has been on the rise and has made fur big business. This has resulted in the killing of more animals as between 40 - 50 million animals are killed every year.
PETA – The
People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals foundation based in the UK is a
charity committed to demonstrating and protecting the rights of all animals. They do their work through research, legislation, celebrity involvement and
protesting through campaigns.

PETA believe that having celebrities campaign for the group has brought them many victories. Celebrities like Kelly Osborne, Stella McCartney,
Sadie Frost, Pink, Pamela Anderson, Carrie Underwood, Charlize Therone, Cindy
Crawford, Nigel Barker, Alyssa Silverstone to mention a few support PETA. In the
fur industry, animals are kept in the factories/fur farms in very small cages,
in very extreme weather conditions and are later ‘bludgeoned’, ‘electrocuted’
and even skinned alive.

Khloe Kardashian joined other celebrities that support
PETA after watching a number of PETA footages showing animal cruelty, and has since (4 years now)
been a PETA spokesperson and even featured in the PETA Ad campaign
‘I’d rather go naked that wear fur’. On the other hand, her famous big sister
Kim Kardashian is known for her love for wearing fur.

PETA contacted Kim K
a number of times about the unfavourable cruelty of the fur industry on
animals. The group even sent Kim a glamorous faux fur throw blanket as her house
warming present when she was preparing to be married to Kris Humphries with the hope that she'd substitute the real thing for faux fur.

However, earlier
this month, Kim attended the Kanye West fashion show as part of the Paris
Fashion wearing fur as her other main accessory (the other being the Kanye West-designed $6,000 pearl adorned shoes).

Last week Thursday, while on the red carpet for the launch
of her perfume, an unknown female threw flour at Kim K. The lady who was arrested by the police was later discovered to be Christina Cho an influential activist for PETA and sister to the group's current Special Projects Manager Michelle Cho. Khloe K, a firm supporter of PETA has come out to express her disappointment
at PETA for supporting such behaviour, and disapproval of her sister being
flour-bombed, and has announced that she has quit supporting the group on those
grounds.
Khloe K also insists that though she is against fur, she
respects her sister's opposing views, and sees the act by Christina Cho as an act of
bullying, an act she openly opposes.

Khloe K further stated in her blog: ''I am
absolutely disgusted by their behaviour. Everyone is
entitled to their own beliefs and opinions - I personally
don't wear fur but that doesn't mean I am going to force my views on anyone
else, especially by violating them.''
TMZ.com reported that Kim K plans to
press charges against Christina Cho and PETA will
support Christina in any possible way they can.

Christina who award by PETA in
2010 for her role within the group once went on the stage during a women’s
conference and snatched the microphone from fashion designer Donna Karen of DKNY to
rant about the use of fur in fashion.
PETA respects Khloe K's decision to cut off ties to the group.
Many celebrities have been photographed wearing fur and
have even made DENIM + FUR + LOUBOUTINS a fashion statement.

Personally, I feel sad for these animals and wish people
(designers, celebrities) would be more sensitive towards them.

Asides using finished products of poor and innocent animals to grace
their fashion collections and boost celebrity patronage, designers actually have
a substitute option for fur… Faux Fur!
